"One of my favorite memories of Lindsay is from senior year of college when we all visited Leah at Bucknell for House Party weekend. On the last night, Leah began crying and couldn’t stop. Courtney, Linds and I tried our best to comfort her, but hugs, sarcastic comments, not even Dominoes pizza helped. After a while, out of fear that Leah was getting dehydrated, Lindsay made a last desperate effort to stop her tears. As we all sat on Leah’s bedroom floor, Lindsay suddenly leapt up and started dancing around the room. She ripped off her wig and began twirling it over her head. Without any music to dance to, Lindsay made up her own song that went something like this, “Dah da dah da dahhh da dah da dah dahhhhh”. She didn’t stop until we all (including Leah) were rolling around the floor laughing. Lindsay had the magic touch – her impromptu song and dance immediately cheered Leah up. That’s the kind of friend Lindsay was. She’d do whatever it took to make you smile."

"The summer after my sophomore year at Duke I went to Australia for a study abroad program with Lindsay. Because we were still in Australia in October, we had to figure out how to celebrate Halloween in a country that did not have any formal Halloween celebrations. There would be no mass trick o' treating, no costumes, or any of the costumes we were use to from the states. There were several of us from Duke, so we decided to band together and have a Halloween party, even if it meant we would be out of place in the city.
We all bought and/or made costumes and got together at night to bring a little american tradition and celebration down under. Most of us had gathered at my apartment, but we were still waiting on Lindsay and her roommate to show up. No one had any idea what her costume would be. There was a knock on my door, i opened it up, and was greeted by one of the most incredible sights..Lindsay dressed as the tin man (see attached photo). It is one of the best costumes I have ever seen, she brought a sense of class, beauty, and her as always extra-large personality to the tin man. With all of us assembled we were ready to walk to my friend's house to continue our celebrations.
So the 8-10 of us left my apartment and began walking down the main street in Brisbane in order to get to my friend's house. Naturally we got several odd stares from the Australians, who were unsure what this pack of costumed kids were doing on a Wednesday night. It was only a 5-7 block walk, but by the time we got to the house Lindsay had managed to recruit 2 random Australian kids our age to come join the celebrations. I will never forget how easily she convinced these strangers to join our motley costumed crew to go to a random party. I do not think anyone else could so easily sway strangers to join in this sort of enterprise. But Lindsay was so personable that I doubt there was ever a second the Australians doubted their decision to join us. Whether it was this Halloween night, or any other time during our four years together at Duke, I never ceased to be amazed by Lindsay's bright happy demeanor, and ability to bring a smile to anyone's face, no matter what sort of day they were having. I know that everyone who was lucky enough to be friends with her will never forget her, and I will always cherish these memories I have of her."

"Before I met Lindsay, I didn’t know what a narwhal was. I remember when we were trying to come up with a name for our senior design group at Duke and Lindsay immediately thought of using it as our group logo and name. Now, every time I see it mentioned, I remember the fun times I got to spend with her, from staying up late working on deliverables, to the time she was my partner in a certain game that involves small white ping pong balls at a distinct Durham establishment. Lindsay will always have a special place in my memories, and on this special day that is her birthday, I just want to bring back a little bit of our time together. I am honored to have been a part of Narwhal & Co. Environmental Consulting Services and Happy birthday Lindsay!"

A few of my favorite memories abroad with Lindsay:
· The 4 guys, Doug, Mike, Toby and I had planned to find a house to live in when we got to Australia. After our temporary housing ran up we had still not found a place to live. Without hesitation, Lindsay and her roommates offered to let us take over their living rooms to sleep for an additional week. Never once did the girls complain and I think they actually enjoyed (maybe) our constant presence.
· When we did finally find a house, it was pretty far from the University and the girls’ apartments. Nevertheless, Lindsay was a constant staple at our house, often coming on her own, taking the bus over and then venturing through what she considered the super scary haunted woods.
· Like myself, Lindsay had an extreme obsession with Harry Potter and the 7th and final book was to be released in the early weeks of our time spent abroad. When I agreed to a race with Lindsay to complete the book, I clearly had no idea what I was getting myself into. I made sure to order mine online to have it arrive the morning following the release. This of course was not good enough for Lindsay. She made sure to wait on line at Midnight the night of the release at a bookstore in the city. An hour after I received my book the next morning, I excitedly told Lindsay I had finished the first chapter. She then informed me that she read the first half of the 607 page book the night before and had only 100 pages left in the entire book. Even after she was done with the book, she would often sit next to me and read over my shoulder, or constantly ask me what part I was up to, almost living vicariously through me as I got to read the book for the first time.
· My mother and grandparents came to Australia to visit and took our group of 8 out for dinner one night. After the dinner, my mother immediately singled Lindsay out, commenting on just how warm, friendly and fun she was. The years following our trip both my mother and grandparents would always ask about Lindsay, what she was up to and how she was doing.
· Not surprisingly, Lindsay was always the one to make new friends. Whether they were American or Australian, Lindsay was always introducing us to her newest friends she had met on campus, in class, or even just at the mall. In Fiji particularly, thanks to Lindsay we developed an extremely close friendship with another group of Americans that we still keep in contact with today.
Without a doubt though, my favorite memory of Lindsay is one that I recall some part of nearly every day. Lindsay had been all bummed out because she wasn’t able to go on the girls’ planned trip to Cairns, the home of the Great Barrier Reef, because it was the same weekend that her parents were coming to visit. When the 4 guys planned the same trip a later weekend, Lindsay immediately jumped on board. I can’t think of many girls that would have been willing to travel with any 4 guys, let alone the 4 of us for 5 days but Lindsay was there without hesitation. She lived in the same hostel room, putting up with all of our fighting, yelling, burping, and the many other endearing qualities and tendencies that most college guys have. On top of that, she was the center of the fun the entire trip. Whether, it was snorkeling, white-water rafting, or just going to dinner with the guys, Lindsay was always leading the way with a smile on her face. When we had woken up at 8 AM after a late night, but still missed our bus for an all-day jungle excursion, Lindsay refused to allow any of us to get down. Instead of going back to bed, we went to a local diner to have some breakfast and when Lindsay saw a Scrabble board lying around, she insisted we play. Never in my life did I think that a Scrabble game, especially one played at 8:30 in the morning could be so fun or something that I would remember most from all the things I did abroad, but Lindsay made that happen. Afterwards, Lindsay immediately insisted on booking a new excursion for the following day since we had missed this one. She and I booked a day of RVing through the woods and professional courses. That day was another I will never forget and one my greatest memories in Australia. Like everything she did, Lindsay pushed the pedal of RV as hard and she could and rode full speed, without apprehension over every hill and jump on the course, always landing on her feet and encouraged me to do the same."

A Tree for Lindsay

We found the perfect spot in East Rock Park by water, trees, and a nearby mountain. Lindsay would have loved it. Wessel brought photos of Lindsay, we giggled, and selected an awesome picture of Lindsay at one with nature to put on the tree.

Wessel even accessorized Lindsay’s tree with earrings she often borrowed, because even trees need to follow lesson #10. This tree may grow to be even taller than our tallest Lindsay, but it can never approach her vivacity. I only hope others will pass by, admire its beauty, and gain some inspiration.
I'll be checking in on Lindsay's tree quite regularly, and if anyone is ever in the area and would like me to take you to this spot, you know I will say, “yes.”
Sending so much love,
Helen & Deuce
